Pawnquill: Chess Rivals
Climb a ladder of five chess rivals, one checkmate at a time, fully offline.
Five rivals sit at the board, each with a face, a temper and a style of their own. Beat one and the next accepts your challenge. Pawnquill is full-rules chess on a calm, warm board, with a scorebook that keeps every game you finish.
How to play:
- Pick a rival on the ladder, or hand the phone to a friend.
- Choose your side: White, Black or Random. The board turns to face you.
- Tap a piece to see where it can go, then tap a square to move.
- Deliver checkmate, agree a draw or resign. The game goes into your scorebook.
Features:
- Complete chess rules: castling, en passant, promotion, check, checkmate and stalemate.
- Automatic draws by the 50-move rule, threefold repetition and insufficient material.
- Five computer rivals, from playful Pip to far-sighted Madame Vell.
- Each rival shows a mood during the game: calm, pleased or annoyed.
- Pass and play mode for two people on one device.
- Arrange any position piece by piece and play it out from there.
- Undo, hint, flip board and a move list during every game.
- Scorebook with up to 100 finished games and a move-by-move scoresheet replay.
- Clear the scorebook, the ladder or a saved game separately.
- Built-in guide to how every piece moves and how draws work.
Progression:
Only Pip is open at the start. A win over a rival unlocks the next rung of the ladder, and your wins, losses and draws against each rival are kept on the Rivals tab. Finish the ladder by beating Madame Vell.
Your unfinished game is saved after every move, so you can close the app and continue later.
Pawnquill works fully offline. No account, no sign-in, no ads. Your games stay on your device.
Set up the board and meet your first rival.
